What are Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small, oval shaped, wingless insects found all over the world. They belong to the cimicid family which is a collection of nocturnal parasite. They can grow around 4-5mm long when fully developed, which allows them to hide on mattresses, bedding and narrow cracks. They feed by sucking blood from humans or animals.

A bed bug can lay 200-250 eggs in her lifetime and have a lifespan of 300 days. Bugs can generally survive several months without food, however, in certain conditions, some bugs can live up to 18 months between feeds.

How dangerous are the bites of bed bugs?

Bedbugs have highly developed mouth parts that can pierce skin and are usually bite people while they are sleeping. Although their bite is painless, some people do not react to the bites, but for others the bites can become extremely itchy and cause swelling, resulting in great discomfort and loss of sleep. In severe cases, intense itching can result in secondary skin infection.

Although bed bugs carry diseases in their bodies, transmission of diseases through their bites is highly unlikely. They are not dangerous unless someone is allergic to them and their bites can often be irritating.

Some people do not react to bed bug bites, while others show a delayed response (up to nine days) or an immediate response with great discomfort and loss of sleep. Intense itching of the bites can result in a secondary skin infection in severe cases.

How did bed bugs get in my house?

Unfortunately, if you have bed bugs, they could have been brought into your house unknowingly in infested luggage, clothing, bedding, shoes, backpacks, furniture or through your encounter of bed bugs in someone else’s home or hotel. They can also travel between apartments through cracks in walls and floors.

How do I know if I have an infestation?

The first signs of bedbugs may be itchiness, redness and swelling on the skin, usually on the arms or shoulders (or exposed, bare skin surface). Bed bugs love cracks, mattress corners, bedding such as blankets and sheets so check for infestation in these areas. Also if you wake up each morning with bite symptoms on your body that were not present when you went to sleep would most likely suggest the possibility that bed bugs are present.

How do I get rid of bed bugs permanently?

Keeping your house hygienic and neat alone are unlikely to control the infestation. However, it will reveal the presence of bedbugs at an early stage and reduce the chances of bed bugs spreading.  Also, Chemical solutions and bed bug bombs can be limited in their efficacy and also hazardous to your health.
